The Snowy Mountains alpine wonderland not only boasts the highest mountain in Australia, but is popular for for skiing and snow sports in winter and adventure sports in summer that allow visitors to enjoy the spectacular mountain scenery,
including fishing, cycling and hiking.
Recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Kosciuzsko National Park contains alpine and sub-alpine plant species found nowhere else in the world and is also home to the rare
mountain pygmy possum and
corroboree frog.
At 2228 metres, Mount Kosciuszko is the highest mountain on mainland Australia. The easiest way to reach to the peak of Mount Kosciuszko is via the year-round chairlift from Thredbo followed by a
6km walk. The Kosciuszko Walk features an elevated walkway made of steel mesh that lets sunlight reach the vegetation below. The walk to Mount Kosciuszko is suitable for most ages and fitness levels.
Depending on the weather, the gorgeous alpine wildflowers burst into colour in December, January and February. With wonderful names such as: Alpine Stackhousia, Hoary Sunray and Snow Beard Heath the delicate shades of white, yellow, purple and orange scatter the rugged landscape.
Kosciuzsko National Park is about six hours’ drive south-west of
Sydney. If you're driving into the park, you will need to purchase a
