Allawah Retreat

Eco Points:
  • Natural area focus
  • Native tree planting
  • Birdwatching and wildlife spotting
  • A peaceful hilltop retreat for couples on 150 acres of Australian native bush, high on a ridge overlooking the picturesque Atherton Tablelands.

Only 1 hour's scenic drive from Cairns in Tropical North Queensland and a short drive away to Tolga village and the township of Atherton, experience the feeling of remoteness on 150 acres, and leave the world and daily stresses behind without sacrificing the creature comforts the secluded lodges provide.

The self contained lodge accommodation at Allawah Retreat offers privacy, peace and tranquillity for couples, with heated deck spas and private plunge pool and panoramic views across the Atherton Tableland.

Allawah Retreat is ideal for a romantic getaway (the retreat does not accommodate children) and a superb base from which to explore all the attractions of the historic Atherton Tablelands - activities include birdwatching, wildlife spotting, rainforest walks, sightseeing, caving, swimming, horseriding, exploring local weekend markets, all year round barramundi fishing on Lake Tinaroo and visiting old goldmines, crater lakes and the Mareeba Tropical Wetlands wildlife reserve.

All the trees planted at Allawah Retreat are natives which provide nectar and seed to attract the birds, butterflies and other wildlife. Some bird life in the area include blue winged kookaburras, black cockatoos, wedge tail eagles, honeyeaters of various varieties, brolgas, rainbow lorikeets, pale headed lorikeets, kingfishers, finches, bower birds, curlews, owls, rainbow bee eaters, pigeons, cuckoo shrike, currawongs, dollar birds, spangled drongos… just to name a few.

Friendly possums will often visit the lodges in the evening and appear on the deck. Other mammals that can be seen at the retreat include the rufous bettong, quolls, bats, flying foxes, whiptail wallaby, agile wallaby, rock wallaby and eastern grey kangaroo.
